For this recording, he composed new works for two of his favorite collaborators, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and soprano Sylvia McNair. This simplest of ensembles produces strikingly accessible contemporary music -- grandeur created From Ordinary Things. Previn's "Sonata for Cello and Piano" was commissioned by Ma, and has become a recital staple for the world's pre-eminent cellist. For "Four Songs", Nobel-laureate Toni Morrison wrote four new poems for Previn to set to music for Sylvia McNair; Ma joins in with a cello obligato, the warm tenor range of his instrument making a perfect accompaniment to McNair's rich voice. "Two Remembrances" (set to translations of German poems) and "Vocalise" are also new compositions from Previn for McNair; the latter composition was completely rewritten by Previn the day before its recording on this album!
