A sensation since it was first used in TV commercials for DeBeers Diamonds, Karl Jenkins' Palladio is the focal point of a new Sony Classical release entitled Diamond Music, which also includes Jenkins' "Adiemus Variations", Passacaglia and String Quartet No.2. Diamond Music was released October 15, 1997. An excerpt from the Allegretto from Palladio, the opening movement and the first track on Diamond Music, has become the musical signature for DeBeers Diamonds in a popular ad campaign that began in 1995. Jenkins conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra and violinists Konstantin Stoianov, Duncan Riddell, Robert St. John and Dermot Crehan on the recording, which also includes the Smith Quartet in Jenkins' String Quartet No.2. Welsh-born Karl Jenkins studied composition at the University of Wales, Cardiff, and in post-graduate work at the Royal Academy of Music, London. He began playing jazz as a university student, eventually joining Soft Machine, one of the most influential jazz-classical-rock fusion bands of the 1970s, playing venues as diverse as the Montreux Jazz Festival and Carnegie Hall. Jenkins' 1995 recording Adiemus - Songs of Sanctuary, written for ethnic voices, percussion and the strings of the London Philharmonic, topped the pop and classical charts in Japan and Europe.
