The award-winning György Ligeti Edition presents the works of one of the late-20th century's most influential and admired creative figures, who has created a body of work at once compelling, challenging, mesmerizing, atmospheric and brilliantly conceived. Here the music receives definitive performances by some of the most important interpreters of contemporary music of our day, all supervised by the composer, who has written new liner notes for each volume. Each volume in the edition sheds light on a different aspect of Ligeti's multi-faceted career, but all the performances are marked by meticulous technique, emotional honesty and utmost authenticity. This volume of vocal works won the Diapason d'or in 1997 and includes 23 selections for voice with piano, orchestra or chorus. Among the selections, the six "Nonsense Madrigals" appear here in a world premiere recording. With whimsical texts by Lewis Carroll and Heinrich Hoffmann, they are performed by the King's Singers. Other repertoire on the disc spans Ligeti's career from his first works, which show the influence of Bartók, to his most recent creations. Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra and the King's Singers, with sopranos Phyllis Bryn-Julson, Rosemary Hardy, Christiane Oelze, Eve Wedin and Malena Ernman, coloratura soprano Sibylle Ehlert, contralto Rose Taylor and baritone Omar Ebrahim.
