NPR - Milestones of the Millennium - Music in Film
Release Date: January 12, 1999 SMK60991 CD Longplay The invention of film and the development of the cinema opened up great possibilities in the world of classical music, helping to produce some of the finest and best-loved works of this century. Today it can be said that film music, as we now know it, is classical music and came about with the technological advances of this millennium. Recognizing this fact, National Public Radio's "Performance Today" focuses on this important milestone of the 20th century. Sony Classical's companion CD to this show features performances drawn from the vast catalog of recordings in our vaults. Beginning with Korngold's music from The Adventures of Robin Hood, itself followed by an excerpt from Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky, the CD continues with the classic theme from the 1943 score from Laura. The "golden age" of American Film Music, when serious modern music began to appear regularly in film scores, is extensively represented by selections from The Captain from Castille, High Noon, A Place in the Sun, The Red Pony, Psycho and others. Also included are the great film epics of the late 1950s and the 1960s, including Ben Hur, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and The Lion in Winter among others. The disk also chronicles the emergence of John Williams and the renewal of interest in film music in the 1970s, and features selections from Star Wars and Dances with Wolves. We end with a rousing celebration from James Horner's award winning, best-selling score for Titanic. As a bonus, a previously unreleased selection is included: the theme from Elmer Bernstein's 1960 score to The Magnificent Seven. In most instances, the composers themselves conduct their own music. National Public Radio and Sony Classical have teamed up in an exciting new partnership to celebrate the millennium and mark the end of the 20th Century. National Public Radio "Milestones of the Millennium" is a new series of records and radio shows dedicated to exploring the development of music over the past 1,000 years. The series debuted on National Public Radio's "Performance Today" program on January 1, 1999 and will air weekly for the next two years. The show will touch on pivotal events, places, movements, artists and music, creating evocative images in sound. The Sony Classical companion CD series will extend and amplify the theme and content of each radio program with selections and performances drawn from the rich Sony Classical archives, featuring such acclaimed artists as Leonard Bernstein, Glenn Gould, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis, Igor Stravinsky, John Williams and many others. Each CD contains an essay by the host of the corresponding NPR program. New CDs in the series will be released every 3-4 months through the year 2000. |
