Release Date: October 07, 1997 SFK60275 CD Longplay One of the greatest opera stars of his day, Richard Tucker was renowned as the world's greatest tenor. Tucker was also considered one of the world's most respected and loved cantors. As a boy he sang in orthodox synagogues, studied the art of cantorial chant, and was eventually hired as cantor at a New York synagogue. As his fame on the opera stage grew he was compelled to relinquish his cantorial post, but he vowed never to renounce his cantorial singing. This commitment is apparent in the many cantorial recordings he made for Columbia Records in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Sony Classical is proud to make available for the first time on CD this classic 1956 recording of Welcoming the Sabbath. This historic recording features composer Sholum Secunda's musical rendition of a complete service for Kabbalat Shabbat (Welcoming the Sabbath) and Arbit (Evening Service) and endeavors to utilize every known musical element and florid style of Chazanut. At the time, this recording helped to revive and elevate the standard of Chazanut. As an additional bonus, Richard Tucker performs four great Hebrew Prayers and a moving rendition of the Hatikvah.
