Richard Tucker was one of the greatest tenors to grace the stage of the Metropolitan Opera house. Even during the 1950s, when sensational tenors numbered more than three, Tucker's voice commanded attention. While his specialty was Italian opera, his moving renditions of Cantorial jewels have long attracted a large following.

This release combines two classic stereo Columbia recordings -- The Art of Bel Canto (MS 6764) and The Soul of Italy (MS 6667) -- which have never been issued on CD before. On this collection, Tucker performs a generous cross section of Neapolitan songs and Italian arias, mostly from the Baroque and Classical periods -- repertoire that he sang as brilliantly as he did the operatic Verdi arias for which he is best remembered. Among the 18th century treasures performed by Tucker is the favorite "Caro mio ben" by Giordani. This winning collection of richly lyrical selections will appeal to both grand-opera aficionados and those who prefer lighter music.
