In the Fabled Fifties her SINGING was the toast of Cafe Society Cabaret in New York City (Blue Angel, Bon Soir, Reuban Bleu) and in other cities of the world. She was the protégé of Goddard Lieberson, who instituted the Studio LP at Columbia Records... Broadway shows revived from the original orchestrations. Portia starred on five albums of those LPs for Columbia Records, including the recent Sony release of Boys of Syracuse.

Portia also recorded three solo albums in the fifties: Let Me Love You, Portia Nelson Sings Bart Howard and Love Songs for a Late Evening / Autumn Leaves are currently released on CD, DRG label.
Portia is included in the Smithsonian Collections of the AMERICAN POPULAR SONG and THE SONGS OF COLE PORTER and KURT WEIL. Portia can also be heard on the recordings of THE GOLDEN APPLE and SOUND OF MUSIC (film).
As a COMPOSER - LYRICIST, Portia wrote the song, MAKE A RAINBOW, sung by Marilyn Horne at President Clinton's Inaugural Ceremony.

The song was originally in the Musical Special she wrote for NBC Television in 1969, DEBBIE REYNOLDS AND THE SOUND OF CHILDREN. She has written several other musicals for television, and material for the Carol Burnett Show.

As ARRANGER she arranged and produced the ELAINE STRITCH CD released '95, on DRG Records, which includes show-stopping, "You Took Advantage of Me" (arranged by special request of Richard Rogers) for the Broadway revival of On Your Toes. Portia also contributed the liner notes for the CD.
