Danielpour: Concerto for Orchestra
Release Date: April 15, 1997 SK62822 CD Longplay This album is the first fruit of the new partnership between Richard Danielpour and Sony Classical, reflected in their shared mandate to create a repertoire for the future. The Concerto for Orchestra was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in commemoration of their centennial in 1995. The subtitle of the piece is "Zoroastrian Riddles", a reference to an idiosyncrasy of Mozart, who would dress up in costume during the carnival seasons in Vienna and read very complex and entertaining riddles to the crowd at intermission. "Mozart's love for puzzles and games and mistaken identity has always fascinated me," says Danielpour. "This piece is also filled with contrapuntal puzzles and games and mistaken identities between various themes in the music." "Anima Mundi" (meaning "the spirit of the world") was a commission from the Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. "Each of the movements relates to one of the seasons. The first, titled "Musica Verna", is spring music; the second, titled "Lac rimae Rerum" is summer music, referring to the passion of love that inevitably will cause pain; the third, "Nox Tenebroso", is autumnal and goblinesque; and the last movement, "Lux Hiberna", means "winter light" and is about the awakening that sometimes occurs in the darkest and coldest times of life." |
