Ligeti: Études; Musica Ricercata
Release Date: January 28, 1997 SK62308 CD Longplay The award-winning György Ligeti Edition presents the works of one of the late-20th century's most influential and admired creative figures, who has created a body of work at once compelling, challenging, mesmerizing, atmospheric and brilliantly conceived. Here the music receives definitive performances by some of the most important interpreters of contemporary music of our day, all supervised by the composer, who has written new liner notes for each volume. Each volume in the edition sheds light on a different aspect of Ligeti's multi-faceted career, but all the performances are marked by meticulous technique, emotional honesty and utmost authenticity. The winner of the Gramophone Award for Best Contemporary Recording in 1997, this volume features the recent Etudes, Books I-III, as well as the earlier "Musica ricercata". Book I was completed in 1985, and Book II in 1994. The works from Book III were completed in 1995, but the composer has expressed his intention to compose more etudes. "Musica ricercata" was composed between 1951 and 1953 and describes Ligeti's search for his own style, at the time influenced by Bartók and Stravinsky. Its eleven sections include an "in memoriam" passage for Bartók and a concluding homage to Girolamo Frescobaldi. This recording features pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard. |
