The award-winning György Ligeti Edition presents the works of one of the late-20th century's most influential and admired creative figures, who has created a body of work at once compelling, challenging, mesmerizing, atmospheric and brilliantly conceived. Here the music receives definitive performances by some of the most important interpreters of contemporary music of our day, all supervised by the composer, who has written new liner notes for each volume. Each volume in the edition sheds light on a different aspect of Ligeti's multi-faceted career, but all the performances are marked by meticulous technique, emotional honesty and utmost authenticity. This volume of chamber works received a Grammy nomination for Best Chamber Music Performance. It features the energetic, Bartók-influenced Bagatelles for wind quintet composed early in his career in Hungary, as well as the later Ten Pieces for Wind Quintet and Trio for Violin, Horn and Piano, all lyrical and virtuosic pieces which achieve the searing intensity of his best work. Also included is Ligeti's Sonata for Solo Viola from 1994. The works receive expert performances from the London Winds, Saschko Gawriloff (violin), Marie-Luise Neunecker (horn), Pierre-Laurent Aimard (piano), and Tabea Zimmermann (viola).
