Mike Marshall

About

Mike Marshall has performed with some of the top acoustic string instrumentalists in the world, including Stephane Grappelli, Mark O'Connor, Bela Fleck and Joshua Bell. He has been at the centre of the acoustic music scene since the beginning of his career as a member of the original David Grisman Quintet. His mastery of mandolin, guitar and violin, together with his ability to swing between jazz, classical, bluegrass and Latin styles, has gained him critical acclaim.

Marshall joins exclusive Sony Classical artist Edgar Meyer on Sony Classical's forthcoming release Short Trip Home (SK 60864). This new Meyer project (to be released in the fall of 1999) is an album of original music, featuring works in a mixture of classical, bluegrass and folk styles performed with violinist Joshua Bell, mandolinist Sam Bush and with Mike Marshall on guitar.

Marshall has continued to push at the boundaries of acoustic instrumental music during his recent collaborations with long time colleagues Edgar Meyer and Béla Fleck. In 1997 this trio released the Sony Classical album Uncommon Ritual (SK 62891), which blended bluegrass (and other folk styles) and classical music. This recording was on the top ten of Billboard's classical music charts for over three months.

In 1983 Marshall forged a partnership with violinist Darol Anger, and together they formed the Montreux Band with pianist Barbara Higbie, bassist Michael Manring and steel drum virtuoso Andy Narell. This band helped point the way for much of the acoustic instrumental music of the 80s and 90s.

In 1986, while still a member of Montreux, Marshall founded a classical string quartet of mandolin family instruments (two mandolins, mandola and mandocello). This group, The Modern Mandolin Quartet, made its Carnegie Hall debut in 1995 and in 1996 received a "Meet The Composer" grant from the Lila Wallace Foundation.

Marshall has recently connected again with his long-time partner Darol Anger in two very different configurations. One is the bluegrass super-group Psychograss, which also features guitarist David Grier, banjo player Tony Trischka and bassist Todd Phillips. The other, the Darol Anger Mike Marshall Band, is a jazz-inspired quartet in which the two, along with bassist Derek Jones and drummer Aaron Johnson, explore the outer reaches of their improvisational skills.
