The Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh was founded in 1908 and incorporated as a not-for-profit organization on September 24, 1951.  The Choir is renowned for its diverse repertoire, including oratorio, symphonic, opera, Broadway, and folk music.  The Choir is composed of more than 120 volunteer singers and a 20-voice professional core; the Choir performs as a full choir and also as a 20-voice chamber chorus.   Collectively, these members contribute nearly 30,000 hours of volunteer service annually to the art of creating magnificent choral music.

The Choir is under the direction of Grammy award-winning Robert Page, one of the country’s leading choral directors, who was recognized in 1998 as the “Artist of the Year” with the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award.  Since 1979, Robert Page has been the music director and conductor of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh.  Critics credit him with bringing the Mendelssohn to the status of one of the leading music organizations of Pittsburgh and to national and international prominence.  This is the final season for Dr. Page as Music Director and Conductor.

Through its own concerts and as choir of choice for the Pittsburgh Symphony, the Choir has built a broad audience for classical and popular choral music in Pittsburgh.  The Mendelssohn Choir presents its own concerts in various venues throughout the tri-state area and continually seeks opportunities for new host organizations.  In addition, the Choir regularly appears in the Symphony’s subscription and pops series at Heinz Hall.

The Choir has pioneered innovative choral training programs.  Among these is the Junior Mendelssohn Choir, a training program for gifted high school singers designed to complement an academic vocal curriculum.  The Junior Mendelssohn recently completed its nineteenth season of offering choral training and performance experience to students in the greater Southwestern Pennsylvania area.

The Choir provides performance opportunities to amateur and professional singers of all ages.  The mission of the organization is to create an appreciation of great choral music and enhance the skills necessary to perform that music within a framework of professional musicianship and high artistic standards.
