Release Date: October 06, 1998 SK60660 CD Longplay The Malle Babbe Choir (Vrouwenkoor Malle Babbe) is the Dutch women's choir whose voices graced the soundtrack to the 1997 Bruce Beresford film Paradise Road (SK 63026). The film told the story of women prisoners of war held captive by the Japanese in Sumatra during World War II who sang a capella vocal arrangements of classic orchestral works as a means of keeping a link with their home, their culture and their sanity under the most dire circumstances. Now these ethereal and beautiful voices reunite for a collection of Christmas songs recorded in the Doopsgezinde Church in their native Haarlem, Holland. Conductor Leny van Schaik leads the Malle Babbe Choir in a rich collection of songs from early music to traditionals and spirituals, and includes "Ave Maria" and multiple language versions of "Silent Night". The emphasis is on the point of view of Mary, giving a powerful and unique woman's perspective on Christmas music. |
