Working with the London Symphony Orchestra (with whom he recorded such soundtracks as Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark) and Judith LeClair, the principal bassoonist for the New York Philharmonic, Williams explores the reverence for nature that permeates Celtic mythology in this moving work inspired by the writings of British poet and novelist Robert Graves. The other works on the album continue in this same theme: Toru Takemitsu's "Tree Line" is about a row of acacia trees near the studio of this Japanese composer; Alan Hohvaness' second symphony was inspired by the Hudson River School of painting; and Tobias Picker's "Old and Lost Rivers" is a tranquil tone poem inspired by the confluence of two rivers east of Houston.
