When polls are taken at radio stations and concert halls around the world to ask audiences what their favorite piece of chamber music is, the answer comes back every time: Schubert's monumental Piano Quintet, nicknamed "The Trout". Vivarte's resident chamber music ensemble L'Archibudelli (pronounced lar-kee-boo-DELL-ee) weighs in with a stunning performance of the "Trout", joined with another favorite Schubert composition, the Arpeggione Sonata (performed by Anner Bylsma on a piccolo cello), and Schubert's Notturno.

The artists featured on this recording are true stars of today's early music scene. Both Anner Bylsma and Jos van Immerseel are award-winning soloists. Bylsma's many recordings for Vivarte and SEON (and before that for Das Alte Werk) have established him as one of the progenitors of the entire early music movement. Jos van Immerseel's cycle of the Beethoven piano concertos on Vivarte have placed him in a position of new prominence and renown extending beyond period instruments fans.

This is only the third recording of the "Trout Quintet" on original instruments. The Arpeggione Sonata is only slightly less well known than the "Trout", and the Notturno is a substantial piece by Schubert not often recorded, making this CD virtually irresistable.
