About"My definition of art," John Denver once said, "is that it creates a space for people to see themselves." In the course of an extraordinary career that spanned more than three decades, John certainly fulfilled that criterion: he produced a catalogue of plainspoken, heartfelt songs in which we all could recognize some aspect of ourselves. Even after tremendous commercial success in the mid-'70s allowed John to build a dream house on a remote promontory in Aspen, Colorado, he still managed to find common ground with his listeners. As Jimmy Ibbotson of the Nitty Gritty Dirty Band told the Aspen Times, "I think he had a calming effect on that psyche that was so jangled by the '60s. John was saying, 'Hey, man, look around. It's beautiful here and I'm happy. You can be too.'" Or as John himself might have put it: "Far out!" |
