 After studying music at Kings College Cambridge where he was a choral scholar, John Alldis became a conductor specialising in choral music. In 1962 he formed the famous John Alldis Choir which gained instant recognition for its performances of contemporary music. Since that time it has promoted new works all over the world; it is also well-known for over fifty opera recordings, with such singers as Pavarotti, Domingo, Sutherland, Caballe, under the world's great conductors. The recordings have won many international awards.

John Alldis founded and conducted the London Symphony Chorus in 1966 and was later appointed conductor of the London Philharmonic Choir 1969-82. A fellow of the Guildhall School of Music, London, he held the post of Choral Professor there from 1966-77. Between 1972 and 1977 he was Conductor of the Danish Radio Choir, Copenhagen. In 1978 he became Artistic Director of the Groupe Vocal de France and he worked in Paris for five years. with this group he made CDs for EMI of Poulenc, Faure, Milhaud, Florent Schmitt etc. In Paris he was closely linked with Messiaen, Boulez and Xenakis whose works he promoted widely in Europe. He was Director of the Israel Chamber Choir (Cameran Singers) from 1989-91 and in 1993 he was appointed Guest Conductor of the Halle Choir in Manchester.

In 1994 he went to Japan to conduct the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus and in 1995 he made a return visit to China, spending two weeks working and conducting a concert with the Central Philharmonic Society of China in Beijing. He returned to Tokyo in 1996 and conducted the Tokyo Philharmonic Chorus in works by Schubert, Strauss, and the Mass for Double Choir by Frank Martin.

John Alldis has worked with the Netherlands Chamber Choir with whom he recorded the Ten Revolutionary Songs by Shostakovich and a CD of works by Britten, Vaughan Williams, Holst, and David Bedford.

He appears as guest conductor in the United States and holds the award of Honorary Fellow of Westminster Choir College Princeton. in 1994 he became a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, France.
