Essential Igor Stravinsky
Release Date: March 25, 2003 J2K89910 CD Longplay Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971) was the 20th century's most celebrated musical revolutionary. His long lifetime spanned an extraordinary amount of cultural change. As a young man in St. Petersburg, he was a neighbor of Tckaikovsky and later he counted Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy among his early champions. The Essential Igor Stravinsky contains over 50 musical pieces that showcase the dizzying range of Stravinsky's work: "Le Sacre du Printemps" ("The Rite Of Spring"), which caused an uproar when it debuted in 1913 but was later beloved as the score for Disney's Fantasia; two early masterpieces "The Firebird" "Petrouchka"; the sweetly neo-classical works "Pulcinella" and "Jeu de Cartes"; the "Circus Polka" (a work conceived for a "ballet of elephants"!); the devotional masterpiece "Symphony Of Psalms"; a charming setting of Edward Lear's "Owl And The Pussycat" and even Stravinsky's own rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner." The Essential Igor Stravinsky offers a stirring portrait of an amazing man and his music. |
