About

Giuseppe Taddei

Giuseppe Taddei enjoyed a fine career, alternating between classic baritone roles and buffo parts. He trained in his native Italy, and debuted in Rome as the ‘Herald’ in Wagner’s LOHENGRIN when he was only 22. Due to the privations of World War 2, he worked only sporadically for the next few seasons, but continued to add roles to his repertoire as conditions allowed. Following the war, he sang in London and in Salzburg, and regularly toured South America with opera troups.

Taddei’s recording career was prolific, as his prime coincided with the emergence of long-play records. Under the sponsorship of record producer Walter Legge, Taddei took part in the classic Mozart cycle undertaken in London with the Philharmonia Orchestra, appearing as Don Alfonso in COSI FAN TUTTE,   Leporello in DON GIOVANNI and Figaro in LE NOZZE DI FIGARO.

Taddei also won respect in dramatic roles, and his singing of Scarpia in Puccini’s TOSCA was much admired. He also appeared as Amonasro in AIDA opposite Maria Callas, and as Germont in LA TRAVIATA.

In his 70th year, Taddei made his triumphant Met debut in the title role of Verdi’s FALSTAFF, putting many a younger singer to shame with his still fresh voice and solid technique. He later sang Dulcamara in L’ELISIR D’AMORE with the company, providing a model of buffo acting and bel canto technique.  Surely when future singers are discouraged at the thought of beginning a major career when somewhat older than the norm, they can remember the example of the seventy year old Met debut artist and take heart!
