This new live concert recording of his own favorite film music, with the Orchestra and Chorus of the Academy of Santa Cecilia complemented by rock musicians and singers and conducted by Morricone himself, is an exciting new chronicle of the development of film music in our time. Ennio Morricone (born in 1928 in Rome) learned to play the trumpet from his father and studied composition, orchestration and conducting at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia. He graduated in 1956 and began his career writing song arrangements for radio and TV. He began composing film scores in the 1960s (one of his first was for Antonioni's L'Avventura) and started a collaboration with director Sergio Leone that brought them both worldwide recognition, established a new film genre (the "spaghetti western"), and introduced a new star (Clint Eastwood). Since then he has joined the first rank of film composers, working with directors such as Pasolini, Fellini, Bertolucci, Oliver Stone, Brian DePalma and Giuseppi Tornatore. He has scored more than 350 films and has been nominated for an Oscar® three times (for The Mission, The Untouchables, and Days of Heaven). Morricone is today acknowledged as the most distinguished and prolific film composer of our time, and continues to score major film productions in his seventies, such as his current Golden Globe winning score for The Legend of 1900 (SK 66767). |
