Angels' Glory
Release Date: October 15, 1996 SK62723 CD Longplay Soprano Kathleen Battle reunites with classical guitarist Christopher Parkening for a new Christmas recording from Sony Classical entitled Angels' Glory, capturing the universal impact of music in the holidays with carols and songs from all over the world. The arrangements and selections in Angels' Glory have been chosen to reflect the meaning of the season, both in their intimacy and their broad range of expression. The recording was made in New York's Abyssinian Baptist Church. Angels' Glory features carols and songs from around the world, including the Caribbean, Poland, the Catalan region of Spain, France, Wales, Austria and the US titles range from "Jesu Bambino" and "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly" as well as spirituals and modern American favorites such as "I Wonder as I Wander" and "Sweet Little Jesus Boy", and the Austrian Christmas classic "Silent Night". Also included are solo moments for each artist -- a virtuoso guitar piece entitled "Jubilation" by Andrew York featuring Mr. Parkening, and an a cappella spiritual "Wasn't That a Mighty Day?" featuring Ms. Battle. Both artists were particularly pleased to include a new song entitled "Mary, Did You Know?" which Mr. Parkening first heard in church three years ago and then introduced to Ms. Battle. "It would be enough because the melody alone is so beautiful," Ms. Battle said, "but the text is so profound and deep and moving." Angels' Glory brings Ms. Battle and Mr. Parkening together for a second time. Their first collaboration, the 1986 recording The Pleasures of Their Company, was a Grammy Award finalist for Best Classical Album and was so successful they were invited to perform the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria" on the Grammy Awards telecast the following year. Both have been multiple Grammy nominees, and Ms. Battle is a five-time Grammy Award winner for her solo and opera recordings. Mr. Parkening has been cited by The Washington Post for "his stature as the leading guitar virtuoso of our day, combining profound musical insight with complete technical mastery of his instrument." The legendary Andrés Segovia called him "a great artist -- he is one of the most brilliant guitarists in the world." Ms. Battle's most recent Sony Classical release is the bestselling So Many Stars (SK 68473), a collection of lullabies, folk songs and spirituals performed with some of today's finest jazz performers including Grover Washington Jr., Cyrus Chestnut and Christian McBride. She toured with several of these performers during 1996/97 season. |
