Chamber Orchestra of Europe

About

Official Site: http://www.coeurope.org/

The Chamber Orchestra of Europe was founded in 1981 and has a membership of 50 musicians from 15 countries who perform together mainly in continental Europe.

Highlights in recent years include three Gramophone 'Record of the Year' awards (for Rossini's opera 'Viaggio a Reims' and the Schubert symphony cycle with Claudio Abbado, and the Beethoven symphony cycle with Nikolaus Harnoncourt which has sold close to one million copies); the broadcast of a six part TV series in the UK; opening the 75th anniversary season of the Salzburg Festival with performances of Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro' conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt; and in 2002, unforgettable concerts in celebration of the Orchestra's 21st birthday with Claudio Abbado, Anne Sofie von Otter and Thomas Quasthoff which were recorded by Deutsche Grammophon and won the 'Best Classical Vocal Performance' category in the 46th Annual Grammy Awards of 2003.

The 2003/2004 season was a busy one, and in addition to its performances at the Mozartwoche Festival in Salzburg with Marc Albrecht, Philippe Jordan, Adam Fischer, Emmanuel Pahud, Christine Schaefer and Christian Tetzlaff, the Orchestra's schedule incorporated engagements throughout Europe and the United States with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, Hélène Grimaud, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Thomas Hengelbrock, Heinz Holliger, Sir Roger Norrington, Murray Perahia, Jukka Pekka Saraste, Andras Schiff, Mitsuko Uchida, Thomas Zehetmair and Tabea Zimmermann.

The 2004/2005 season is again challenging; in addition to their tour together of Germany, the Netherlands and Cyprus, the COE, Emmanuel Krivine and Maria João Pires will also tour extensively in Spain. Amongst the world's finest artists with whom the Orchestra is also appearing across Europe are Olari Elts, Hélène Grimaud, Thomas Hampson, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Thomas Hengelbrock, Heinz Holliger, Yvgeny Kissin, Sir Neville Marriner, Marc Minkowski, Andras Schiff, and Mitsuko Uchida. Meanwhile, the COE's latest recording on Warner Classics of Beethoven's Triple Concerto, Rondo and Choral Fantasy with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Pierre-Laurent Aimard, has received excellent reviews and awards.
