Barrington Pheloung

About

Though internationally recognised for his highly individual scores to the British mystery series Inspector Morse and Dalziel and Pascoe, Barrington Pheloung has also written the music for over fifty other works for television, film, ballet, dance and theatre. In his score for the film, Hilary and Jackie, Barrington Pheloung takes on a singularly musical challenge, providing the soundtrack for the dramatised film memoir about the celebrated British cellist Jacqueline du Pré. On the CD, which was released by Sony Classical in December (SK 60394), Barrington Pheloung combines the original music he composed for this film with works of Bach, Haydn, Elgar, and others performed by du Pré during her career.

Based on Hilary and Piers du Pré's book "A Genius in the Family", a personal account of their lives with Jacqueline, Hilary and Jackie examines the complex relationship between the two sisters, set against Jacqueline's dazzling rise to stardom and marriage to pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim. Emily Watson, an Academy Award® nominee for her performance in Breaking the Waves plays Jackie with Rachel Griffiths (Muriel's Wedding) as Hilary.

Born in Sydney, Barrington Pheloung spent his early years a guitarist in a blues band before travelling to London, where he studied composition, guitar, doublebass, and conducting at the Royal College of Music. In 1977, he won a place on the International Course for Professional Composers and Choreographers at Surrey University. In 1979, he was appointed Musical Advisor to the London Contemporary Dance Theatre and toured with the group in the UK and internationally as their Principal Conductor until 1990.

Barrington Pheloung's penchant for intermingling his music with that of celebrated masters stems not only from Inspector Morse's noted fondness for opera. In 1993, he completed music for "A Mid summer Night's Dream", a new ballet choreographed by Robert Cohan for the Scottish Ballet in which it was his brief to write "contemporary extensions to the music" of Mendelssohn's original incidental music for the play. The ballet was subsequently presented throughout the UK and Canada.

In addition to his theatrical, television, film, and dance music, Barrington Pheloung composed a Double Guitar Concerto for the Bath International Guitar Festival in 1995 and a Cello Concerto, which was premiered by Caroline Dale at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Another guitar concerto, commissioned by Carlos Bonell, received its first performance at the Nottingham Guitar Festival.

The soundtrack for Hilary and Jackie features Barrington Pheloung conducting the London Metropolitan Orchestra.
