BAIBA SKRIDE – violin

"One of the most exciting young talents to have emerged since Itzhak Perlman burst upon the scene in the late 1960s. Skride possesses the rare ability to speak directly through her Stradivari in a way that has one completely fogetting the mechanics of a 'violinist at work'. The fact that hers is a live concert recording makes her achievement seem all the more staggering." -- The Strad - CD of the Month

“A natural musician to the ends of her fingertips”, praised Classic FM Magazine of the Latvian violinist, Baiba Skride, who continues to captivate audiences worldwide with her extraordinary performances and enchanting personality.<br.
Baiba Skride’s impressive positioning in the USA is ever-increasing, highlighted significantly than with her Philadelphia Orchestra debut under the direction of Peter Oundjian in Autumn 2006. Since making her US debut with St Louis Symphony in 2003, Baiba Skride has appeared to great acclaim with the Baltimore, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Houston Symphonies. After her debut with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in 2005, she was not only invited to return, but also to be their soloist on the Orchestra’s forthcoming European tour, under the direction of Jeffrey Kahane.

Baiba Skride has been recording for Sony Classical since 2004. Since then, she has released three highly praised CDs: a solo violin disc (Ysaye, Bartok, Bach) a Mozart, Schubert and Michael Haydn concerto disc, and a Shostakovich and Janacek concerto disc, the former a live recording of the first concerto with the Munich Philharmonic under Mikko Franck. Her fourth disc, a duo program with her long- established partner and sister, Lauma Skride, will be launched during a tour of Japan and the Far East in Autumn 2006. Indeed, chamber music remains at the heart of Baiba Skride’s music-making, and forthcoming duo appearances with Lauma Skride include San Francisco, Vancouver, London, Madrid, Bologna, Dortmund and Hanover. The sisters have also recently joined forces with cellist, Sol Gabetta, and this trio are rapidly gaining impressive recognition for their performances on the concert platforms of Europe.

Baiba Skride was born into a musical Latvian family in Riga in 1981 where she began her studies, transferring in 1995 to the Conservatory of Music and Theatre in Rostock, where she studied with Professor Petru Munteanu. Baiba Skride plays the Stradivarius "Wilhelmj" violin (1725), which is generously on loan to her from the Nippon Music Foundation.
