About

Anner Bylsma

Anner Bylsma, 1959 winner of the Pablo Casals Competition, is that rare player in the world of classical music, a performer who is equally comfortable on a period instrument and a modern instrument. A founding member of VIVARTE recording ensemble L’Archibudelli, Bylsma also plays regularly with such diverse groups and chamber orchestras as the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra; Tafelmusik (also heard on the VIVARTE label); the Australian Chamber Orchestra; the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment; the Freiburger Barock; and Rondom, a chamber ensemble specializing in music of the twentieth century.

Bylsma appears on Sony Classical’s VIVARTE label. His most recent recordings are Beethoven: The Complete Sonatas for Pianoforte and Violoncello (S2K 60761) with fortepianist Jos van Immerseel; The Cello and the King of Prussia (SK 63360), a disc of cello music by Beethoven and Duport; a disc of Vivaldi concertos performed with Tafelmusik (SK 62719); a disc of Schubert piano trios with L’Archibudelli (SK 62695); and a disc of Brahms’ two sextets, also performed by L’Archibudelli (SK 68252). Two new discs, scheduled for release on the label in July 2000, are Beethoven's Archduke and Ghost Trios (SK 51353) and Vivaldi's Sonatas for Violoncello and Basso Continuo (SK 51350).

A noted recitalist and soloist, Anner Bylsma performs frequently throughout Europe, the Americas, Australasia, Russia, and Japan, appearing not only as a guest soloist with some of the world’s finest orchestras but also in recital with L'Archibudelli. In recent seasons, he has performed with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Carnegie Hall and in recital with Malcom Bilson at Merkin Hall in New York. In addition, he has played in virtually all of the major early music series in the United States and Canada. A gifted teacher of both the baroque and modern cellos, Bylsma has presented master classes at the Paris Conservatory, the Berlin Hochschule, and The Juilliard School in New York City.

The child of passionate musicians, Anner Bylsma studied with Carel Boomkamp at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In 1957 he received the Royal Conservatory’s Prix d’excellence. For six years, he was principal cellist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. Since 1982, he has been the Erasmus Scholar at Harvard University, while also serving on the faculties of the Royal Conservatory in The Hague and the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. Bylsma received an honorary doctorate from New England Conservatory in 1995.

Bylsma’s recordings of solo and chamber works for Sony Classical’s VIVARTE label have received numerous prizes, including the Edison prize, the Diapason d’or, the Liszt prize, and most recently the Vivaldi prize. His recording of Brahms’ sonatas (SK 68249) was nominated for a Grammy award in 1995. Among his releases are discs of chamber works by Onslow (SK 64308), Dotzauer (SK 64307), Mozart (SK 66259), Schubert (SK 46669) and Bruckner (SK 66251), all with L’Archibudelli. He also appears on the historic SEON series, which is now being remastered and reissued by Sony Classical.

Bylsma is the author of Bach the Fencing Master, which is about the first three of Bach’s cello suites.
