About
Alexander Schreiner (1901Ð87) performed on the Mormon Tabernacle organ on Temple Square in Salt Lake City for more than fifty years. One of the most celebrated and influential American organists of the twentieth century, Schreiner became a popular radio figure through Music and the Spoken Word, the weekly radio broadcast featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and organ. He was repeatedly voted one of the top organists in the Musical America radio poll. Born in Nuremberg, Germany, Schreiner immigrated to the United States with his family in 1912 and soon began studying with Tabernacle organist John J. McClellan. Twelve years later, Schreiner was appointed as Tabernacle organist. From 1930 to 1939, he worked as the first organist for the University of California at Los Angeles. He returned to Utah in 1939, and during the next decade he supervised the rebuilding of the famed Mormon Tabernacle organ. Through his many administrative assignments, Schreiner exerted tremendous influence over policies governing music in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. |
