 She was the singing voice for Bess (played by Dorothy Dandridge) in the 1959 movie Porgy and Bess.

 

She studied at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, the Juilliard School and the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, as well as training with Povla Frijsh. In 1952 she made her New York debut. She sang with the New York City Opera, the New England Opera and major orchestras. Career peaks have included the world premiere of Foss' Time Cycle, the American premiere of Poulenc's Gloria, and a solo appearance under Bernstein for the opening of Lincoln Center's concert hall.

Her range stretches from Baroque to the contemporary.

She has been a voice teacher for SUNY at Stony Brook, Eastman School of Music and Aspen Festival. She is a member of the faculty at the Manhattan School of Music (formerly Chair of the Voice Department).
