The effort to record all of Copland's works in the 1950s, 60s and 70s was one of the milestones of the Columbia and CBS Masterworks catalogues. His popular works are recognized throughout the world as masterpieces. Known as the "Dean of American composers," he exercised an influence on 20th century American musical style in general that cannot be overestimated. Every major American musical figure from Bernstein to the Juilliard String Quartet, from Benny Goodman to Andre Kostelanetz, championed Copland and supported his efforts. In A Copland Celebration, Sony Classical revisits its unparalleled Copland archives, reissuing his most popular titles on three new two-disc collections, and including for the first time on CD some rarities that have previously appeared only on LP. Each booklet features never before seen photos of Copland at the original recording sessions, reproductions of the original LP covers and much more, with booklet notes by Howard Pollack, author of the critically acclaimed book Aaron Copland: The Life and Work of an Uncommon Man. Volume 1 includes some of Copland's most famous works, including "Fanfare for the Common Man", Rodeo and Billy the Kid. A particularly special track is an extended segment of Copland rehearsing the original chamber version of Appalachian Spring, making its first appearance on compact disc. Also debuting on CD is "Nonet for Strings" with Copland conducting the Columbia Chamber Ensemble. |
